About the Trust

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital services to a population of around half a million people across North Tyneside and Northumberland.

These services run from three general hospitals in Hexham, North Tyneside and Wansbeck and seven community hospitals situated in Berwick, Alnwick, Rothbury, Haltwhistle, Blyth, Morpeth and Wallsend.

The Trust has an annual budget of £270 million.  It is one of the largest employers in the North East, with over 6,000 staff.

What does being a Foundation Trust really mean?

It means the Trust is:
  • Free from central government control and strategic health authority performance management
  • Authorised and monitored by an independent regulator known as Monitor
  • Can borrow money within limits set by the regulator, can retain surpluses and decide how to best develop services for their local populations.
Most importantly it means the Trust has greater control over its services so can respond very effectively to the needs of local communities.  It is accountable to local people through its 69 elected governors and 70,000 strong membership, made up largely of members of the community who have recently used our services.

Engagement work starts about our Berwick hospital plans

We organised a series of roadshows to find out what people living in north Northumberland and Berwickshire need and want from a new hospital for Berwick.

We talked to residents about existing health services and how they could be developed and sought people’s thoughts about where a new hospital could best be located.
Thank you to the people who came along and talked to us, this will help us develop a hospital which meets your needs.

Feedback from the roadshows will be available over the coming months.
